Last April, Philly Drum Project began hosting monthly events to help drummers in Philly share gear, lessons, beats, and gigs. The monthly series, entitled Beats, Brews, & Banter, has hosted workshops by such drummers as Eric Slick of Dr. Dog, George “Spanky” McCurdy of Lady Gaga, and Freddy Berman of Amos Lee. Help PDP celebrate its first year as an organization with a one-year anniversary show at World Cafe Live Philadelphia with performances by “Motzer, Tidd, Hoenig,” Loop 2.4.3, and Rob Brosh & Will Alpers Drumset Duo. Jonathan Levy, Tim Motzer, Ari Hoenig is a jazz trio led by drummer/composer/educator Ari Hoenig. Hoenig has been praised for his distinctive melodic drumming, in which he uses his sticks and hands to change the pitch of his drums in order to achieve a full range of chromatic notes. He has recorded, written, and produced nine CDs as a leader. He has written and published three educational books, three educational DVDs, and a songbook. His groups tour worldwide and perform weekly at the legendary New York jazz club Smalls. Other artists Hoenig has performed or recorded with include Shirley Scott, Gerry Mulligan, Jean Michel-Pilc, Mike Stern, Kenny Werner, Joshua Redman, Wayne Krantz, Herbie Hancock, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Richard Bona, Dave Liebman, Chris Potter, Toots Thielemans, Dave Holland, Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny, Pat Martino, Ivan Linz, and Trey Anastasio.

Loop 2.4.3 creates uniquely American music with a rock and roll heart and skills informed by classical training, jazz, poetry, and experimentalism. Praised for their “intricate, energetic performances,” (New York Times) and their “taut compositions with a stunning improvisational sense” (Time Out Chicago), virtuosic percussionists and composers Thomas Kozumplik and Lorne Watson create evocative narratives using percussion, electronics, voice, strings, and more. Their “transportive percussion odysseys” (Boston Phoenix) journey through grounded primal energy to cosmic atmospheric reaches in “dramatic, layered, colorful, and brilliantly constructed” (First Coast News.com) compositions most often compared to the music of Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and Harry Partch. “Kozumplik and Watson never sound like makers of arbitrary music…It all sounds like part of a well-thought-out tradition.
