Whiplash Bonus Clip: Star Drummers on Music Education

It’s been a big week for the independent film Whiplash, in which Miles Teller portrays an aspiring jazz drummer training under a monstrous conductor played by J.K. Simmons. On Sunday, February 22, the movie won three Oscars, including one for Simmons in the supporting actor category. And on Tuesday the 24th, the film was released by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in Blu-ray, DVD, and digital HD formats.

The Blu-ray includes a forty-minute documentary called Timekeepers, in which a host of famous drummers, including Simon Phillips, Peter Erskine, Gregg Bissonette, Doane Perry, Roy McCurdy, and Kate Schellenbach, talk about various aspects of their musical life. Here’s a clip from Timekeepers where Chad Smith, Kenny Aronoff, and Ryan Brown reflect on their drumming education.
