John Sferra And Tom Shelley Team Up In Clinic

Unique Presentation Will Be Part Of Big Beat World Drumming Record Attempt

In a special format that literally promises “something for everyone,” drum great John Sferra and percussionist (and Universal Percussion president) Tom Shelley will appear in clinic together this coming November 6. Their presentation will be linked to a Big Beat world drumming record attempt sponsored by Stebal Drums of Willowick, Ohio, in conjunction with the Five-Star Drum Shops. The event will be held at Lake Catholic High School, 6733 Reynolds Road, in Mentor, Ohio.

John Sferra is the original drummer for ’70s rock favorites Glass Harp. His combination of power and finesse—including incredible single-bass technique—has been a major contribution to the creative performances of the Ohio-based jam trio. John will demonstrate his distinctive drumming style by playing, as well as by performing jaw-dropping drum solos. With a wealth of experience to share, John will also offer tips on playing, tuning, miking, and recording that will prove valuable to professional drummers and hobbyists alike.

Tom Shelley’s percussion presentation will have a split focus. Tom will perform with John Sferra to illustrate the musical connection between drumkit and percussion. Tom will also conduct a segment for younger children in which he’ll demonstrate how to play a variety of hand percussion instruments. This will be followed by a drum circle that will give those children (and any interested adults) the opportunity to get “hands-on” with drumming. Advertisement

John and Tom’s presentation will be the educational/entertainment segment of Stebal Drums’ Big Beat event—a world drumming record attempt held annually since 2008 to benefit music education in local schools. Previous year’s events have raised a total of $20,000, and it’s hoped that drummer participation in this year’s event will exceed all previous years. More than a dozen industry sponsors—including Universal Percussion—have donated nearly $14,000 in percussion gear to help “drum up” interest.
