There is a long tradition of fantastic drummers who have created the Latin drum set tradition and applied it to the jazz lineage. It started with Guillermo Baretto and Walfredo de los Reyes Sr. and passed on to Enrique Pla’ and Julio Baretto. From there it was passed on to Ignacio Berroa and Steve Berrios, then along came drummers such as Horacio Hernandez, Robby Ameen, Antonio Sanchez, Duduka Da Fonseca, and Dafnis Prieto. But along the way so many important Latin-jazz drummers have been overlooked, and even more Latin music (that isn’t Afro-Cuban or Brazilian) has been overlooked. Drummer-composer-bandleader Marlon Simon is one such drummer, he comes from Venezuela and has spent time in Philadelphia, New York City, New Jersey, and is now residing in Texas.
