RECORDINGS Theraphosa Transcendence Yet another debut from an international heavy-rock band that slays. A product of Paris’s ever-more-prolific metal scene, Theraphosa named themselves after one of the most “metal” inspirations we’ve seen recently: the largest genus of spider in the world. Equal parts easily digested groove metal and progressive odd-time exploration, Transcendence features both clean and dirty vocals, some highly cinematic electronic soundscapes, and even surprising orchestral and choral textures not expected on this heavy of a record. Drummer Martin Grimart’s airtight syncopated kick pattern and hemiola ride shifts on “Dies Irae,” rock-solid double kick playing on “Obsession,” and intricate hi-hat work on “Attrition” highlight his contributions. Transcendence, which was produced by Francis Caste (Hangman’s Chair, the Great Old Ones) and, according to the band, themed around “the decay of mankind,” sounds absolutely massive.
