Herlin Riley

Herlin Riley is an acclaimed American drummer, percussionist, and composer, known for his exceptional contributions to jazz and his mastery of rhythm. Born on February 15, 1957, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Riley grew up immersed in the rich musical traditions of the city. He comes from a family of musicians, and his early exposure to gospel, blues, and jazz shaped his distinct style.

Riley started playing drums at a young age and later pursued formal music education at Southern University in Baton Rouge. He began his professional career in New Orleans, performing with local bands before joining Ahmad Jamal’s group in the early 1980s. His collaboration with Jamal garnered critical acclaim and showcased his unique blend of precision, groove, and creativity.

In 1988, Riley joined the legendary Wynton Marsalis and became a cornerstone of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
